Web Access to the ESXi file system

As a link from ESXi homepage.

  1. Open a web browser and type in the IP Address or DNS name.
  2. On the right hand side select "Browse datastores in this host's inventory"
  3. Login if prompted
  4. Select the name of the datastore you wish to access
  5. Access your files.

By IP Address or DNS and add the datastore URL.

Example: https://esxi.mycoolname.com/folder?dsName=datastore1
Make sure to substitute your ESXi server’s IP address or hostname, and the name of your datastore with what I have listed here. You can download files via web browser.

Why would you want to do this?

Browsing the datastore from the web will allow you to download files from the ESXi Server for backup purposes. I store all of my ISO (CD-ROM) images on my ESXi Server. If I need to put the ISO image on a physical CD I can download the image to my local PC and the write it to a CD-ROM.

What is ESXi Server

VMware ESXi Server is an enterprise-level virtualization product offered by VMware, Inc. VMware call ESXi a bare metal hypervisor as it becomes the server OS. There is no need to load any other server operating system.

The base ESXi Server product is Free, yes Free. Support and added features are billable. Added features include high availability, load balancing, and consolidated backup.

VMware ESXi can be obtained in one of two ways.

1. It can come embedded in a new server. It is actually in a flash chip inside it is not installed on the hard drive.

2. You can download the ESXi installer from VMware.com

Virtualization

Typically when discussing virtualization in the SOHO or SMB market the industry is discussing the ability to run multiple operating systems (OS) on one physical computer. Each OS runs independently from the other with its own applications. Initially it can be a hard concept to grasp but like anything else; once you learn it you’ll think it’s easy to understand.

It works similar to the way that an application like Word works. Word is able to open many documents at a time and each document is separate from the other. If you think of Word as your computer, and each document as a virtual machine you have the concept of virtualization down.

The diagram below show shows a Web Server, Database Server, and a Mail server running in virtual machines on one platform.

Containing costs, setting up training environments, application development, application testing, and disaster recovery are some common uses of virtualization.

Microsoft, VMware, and XEN are the most well know virtualization vendors and more information can be found on their webistes.

Run the ESXi installer from a USB flash drive

First, you need to ask yourself why you want to do this. If it’s just to test to see if your hardware will work with ESXi then proceed. If you plan on using this for a production server, STOP, this is not supported by VMware.

If that did not scare you away, VM-Help.com has a great article on getting this to work. Follow this link to see how its done.

How do I setup my SOHO network.

How should I setup my SOHO network?
The answer to the question is not as easy as it seems because there are a lot of variables depending on what you are going to do on the network. The most common configuration is one where the SOHO network has several machines that are connected to the internet via a DSL or Cable Modem. This is a simple setup and there is little or no manual configuration.

A SOHO router would be connected to the DSL or Cable Modem. Most of SOHO routers have enough network ports on the back to support four PC’s and if you purchased a wireless router you’ll be able to use wireless too.
The router serves as a "server" for DHCP, firewall, DNS etc. and a hub/switch in one.

Make sure to follow the directions that come with your router when setting up your SOHO network. The most important step in the configuration is to change the default password on the router. If you don’t do this, someone may be able to lock you out of your own network or worse.

If you are using wireless, make sure to enable wireless security. This will ensure that only authorized computers will have access to your wireless network.

If you can’t figure out how to do this on your own with the instructions from your router, make sure to find someone that can help you. Setting this up incorrectly can put your important files at risk.
